Welcome message from the Chairman

All Party Parliamentary China GroupWelcome to the website of the All Party Parliamentary China Group. As China’s economy continues to boom and its presence on the international scene becomes ever more apparent, there is an ever increasing need for the UK to engage with China. Given that parliaments are both the legislatures and national fora of nations and their activities impinge on other aspects of a nation’s interests, it is vital that this aspect of our bilateral relations is developed. As such, the All Party Parliamentary Group is crucial part of the UK-China relationship. The Group seeks to promote an understanding of China’s position in the world today and explore some of the challenges it may pose to us here in the UK. It provides an opportunity for discussion on China related issues amongst parliamentarians and promotes a cross parliamentary dialogue with the National People’s Congress and our counterpart organisation there, the China-UK Friendship Group. We are one of the largest APPGs in Parliament, with members from across parties and from both Houses.

This site gives information about the Group and its activities. There are links to other China related organisations in the UK and a News Feed updated daily with the latest news reports on China. I hope you enjoy looking around the site.

Delegation from the National People’s Congress

ImageThe All Party Parliamentary China Group received its first formal inward delegation from the National People’s Congress in June 2006. The delegation, led by Mr Ji, also Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, was well received and had a series of high level meetings in Whitehall. They met the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, Minister for Trade, Ian McCartney, Mike Gapes, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Lord Mayor of London, David Brewer amongst others. The delegation was also hosted by the Inter Parliamentary Union for a successful day in parliament where they attended Prime Minister’s Questions. The programme included a parliamentary discussion session attended by members of the APPG and the IPU, which offered a valuable platform for parliamentarians from both countries to exchange views across a range of subjects. The delegation also visited the Scottish Parliament, meeting with First Minister of Scotland, Jack McDonnell and had a day in Cambridge where they visited one of the Group’s sponsors, Cambridge Assessment and the Master of Gonville and Caius College.
